Almodóvar in the Near West: first images of his filming in Almería

The filmmaker is already filming in Tabernas with Ethan Hawke, Pedro Pascal, Manu Ríos and Pedro Casablanc

Pedro Almodóvar gave this Monday the first clapperboard stroke of his short film 'Extraña forma de vida', a western that has brought him to the Tabernas Desert and starring Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal.

For his first foray into Western cinema, the filmmaker from La Mancha has chosen the town of Western Leone, built for the filming of 'Until his time came' and currently for sale.

In this location the first official images of the filming in Almeria have been taken: in them you can already see Almodóvar with Ethan Hawke, Pedro Pascal and Manu Ríos, another of the actors in the cast who have traveled to our province, as well as Pedro Casablanc has done it.

Agustín Almodóvar, brother of Pedro and co-founder with him of the production company El Deseo, has been in charge of publishing the snapshots on his social networks, the work of Fernando Iglesias Mas, a close collaborator of the filmmaker and in charge of the still photography of his latest works , the short film 'The Human Voice' (2020) and the feature film 'Mothers Parallels' (2021).

In this long-awaited short film, the first foray into the western genre by the director of 'Pain and Glory' and 'Mothers Parallels', Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello is in charge of costume design, in addition to serving as associate producers. And the images show a preview of that work, with Ethan Hawke, Pedro Pascal and Manu Ríos dressed as cowboys.

In the networks, by the way, there are those who have already drawn a resemblance between the young Manchego interpreter, popular for the series 'Elite' and for his facet of 'influencer', and Kodi Smit-McPhee in 'The power of the dog', the western that gave the Oscar to the direction to Jane Campion.

Ríos will also perform the fado by Amalia Rodrigues that gives the title to the short film, which lasts about 30 minutes: in the sequences shot on Monday, the actor played the guitar outside one of the Western Leone buildings. "Manu Ríos, brilliant fado singer in 'Extraña forma de vida'. Follow the adventure," Pedro Casablanc wrote on his Instagram profile on Tuesday along with a photo of both.

After that first day of shooting in Tabernas, on Tuesday the filming was scheduled, in one of the houses in the town of Tabernas that have been arranged and decorated for this production, of sequences between Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal.

This Wednesday, Agustín Almodóvar has shared an image in which the director appears together with both actors in an interior of the Western Leone town.

The history

In 'Extraña forma de vida', as Pedro Almodóvar himself anticipated, Silva, a rancher (Pedro Pascal), crosses the desert that separates him from Bitter Creek on horseback to visit Sheriff Jake (Ethan Hawke). Twenty-five years earlier, both the sheriff and Silva worked together as hit men.

"Silva comes under the pretext of reuniting with his friend from youth, and in fact they celebrate their meeting, but the next morning Sheriff Jake tells him that the reason for his trip is not the memory of their old friendship …", he pointed out. Oscar-winning filmmaker from La Mancha without wanting to say more "so as not to reveal all the surprises of the script".

In addition to the four actors who are already in Almería, Jason Fernández, José Condessa, George Steane and Sara Salámo, the only female presence in the cast, take part in 'Extraña forma de vida'.

Along with locations in Tabernas, the short will be filmed in a ranch built on the outskirts of Madrid, according to 'Variety'.
