The recent fire at the plastic recycling plant made me think of this...

In the past, one of the issues with living in Almerimar in the summer has been the nasty smell that occasionally comes down over the hill first thing in the morning. I believe that this has been due to the wind blowing the smell from a plant refuse recycling plant. I think that the smell comes from somewhere between Almerimar and the motorway.

Some years ago it was a very regular occurrence every summer. Touch wood, it seems to have been much better so far this year. I think I can only remember the smell being here on a small number of occasions. Also, the strength of it seems much less than in the past. Fingers crossed that this continues to be the case.

Just a quick mention of a new Facebook group that I think was set up by the Junta Local de Almerimar. It is called Almerimar Vivelo (translation from Google is Live It). It only started recently.

If you are on Facebook it is a good place to look for things to do with Almerimar.

Please note that the group is a public one.

Bus stop has moved - 26 July 18

A message from Irene in the tourist office....

"I don't know if you know, but recently the bus stop at Calle del Faro (Puerto) has been moved to Calle Arquitecto Julián Laguna, just in front of the Tourist Information Office. Attached you will see the sign that they gave us."

I received the following message via the Facebook page associated with the site...

"Hi, I have 2 guidebooks to give away before Thursday : guidebook of the ports of France and guidebook of the ports of Italy.
They could help some sailors instead of going to the garbage."

If anyone is interested in picking up these books please get in touch soon. I will then pass on contact details so you can meet somewhere in Almerimar. Probably the marina area I guess.

There was a brief discussion about Spanish law and how urbanisations are managed at the AGM for our urbanisation last night.

After the meeting I remembered that there is a thing called "The Law Of Horizontal Property" (Ley De Propiedad Horizontal) in Spain. This defines a set of legal rules for how urbanisations are managed. Plus the way in which additional local rules can be added on a per urbanisation basis.

The central rules get changed from time to time so the following article from 2012 may be a little out of date. However it gives a good general idea of the situation:

Spanish Community of Owners

The article here on the Eye On Spain site has an interesting article about very drinkable cheaper wines available in Spain. It covers 8 bottles on sale at supermarkets for under 2 euros a bottle.

I have just spent approximately 1 1/2 hours sending a certified letter.

I had to drive up to El Ejido, find somewhere to park, walk to the post office, queue up in the post office, send the letter, walk back to the car and then drive back to Almerimar.

What a massive waste of time.

We really need a post office in Almerimar and have done so since I first came here almost 14 years ago.

I have been asked to advertise some items for sale. If you are interested in any of the items below please get in touch and I will give you contact details for the seller.

Item No. for sale Price
Vacuum Cleaner 1 25 €
Oak bedside cabinets 3 25 € (each)
Dressing table with mirror & stool 1 75 €
Brown leather footstool 1 10 €
Oak lamp table 1 25 €

The article here on the Eye On Spain website has some interesting information about the expected rate of property sales in Spain in 2018.

I know from chatting to our friend Sharon, from Alcor Properties, the market is certainly picking up in the Almerimar area at the moment.

One of the things I have yet to do is visit the catacombs that are under the city of Almería. They were built to provide safety during the Spanish civil war.

Some friends are coming over in June and they have booked to do a tour of the catacombs. Sadly, the tour they are doing is now fully booked. So we will have to book this trip for another time.

If you are interested in seeing the catacombs you can book tickets here. It looks like the price is only 3 euros a person.

Alastair Stewart Expat MPs - 14 April 18

Alastair Stewart has asked me to publish the link here to his latest article about the petition for overseas MPs.

The petition is well on the way to having the first 1000 signatures of the 10,000 needed for a government response. This number of signatures has to be reached by 6 October 2018.

Further to the recent article about the petition for specific MPs to represent expats in the House of Commons. You can see more details about the petition here.

Here is a quote from Alastair Stewart who created the petition:

"Full-time MPs, elected by citizens abroad, are urgently needed to represent our issues and concerns. While we can register to vote at home, we’re voting in a constituency that some people have little connection to anymore and might not have visited in years.

It’s completely unjust that someone living in say, Edinburgh, has to fight to have their representative solve local matters all while someone living out-with Britain is taking up the time of the same MP."

One good thing that is happening at the moment is the plan to remove the current 15 year time limit on voting rights for people who move abroad. Providing clearer representation in parliament for these voters seems sensible.

One of our readers has asked us to publish this issue.....

"I’ve started a campaign calling for an MP to represent British citizens abroad. It would be hugely appreciated if you’d consider posting this on Almerimar Today"

You can see and sign the petition here.

In the last couple of days we have had our first significant encounters with mossies this year.

On Sunday afternoon we played 9 holes of golf from around 4pm in the afternoon. Just before we finished at around 6pm we started to have some drizzle. As we were playing the last hole we spotted a few mossies flitting about.

Then yesterday afternoon Jacqui spotted a mossie in the apartment. This is a reasonably unusual event as the fly screens normally do a good job of keeping them out.

I hope this is not a sign that we are going to have a lot of them this year. Hopefully the extra money the council is spending will keep the numbers down.
