Almerimar

It looks like Golf Almerimar is giving a very nice gift to the golfers this summer. Jacqui and I played in Friday golf yesterday after almost a 2 week break from the golf course. We noticed a few changes.

It appears that the fairways are being cut much wider this year. In previous years the Almerimar course has become very difficult in the summer. This is due to the length of the rough that grows quickly only an inch or two off the fairway.

When we played yesterday it looked like the fairways were going to be cut wider this year. Perhaps something like 5 metres wider on each side of the fairway on some holes. As the rough is not yet growing really rapidly it is not certain that this will be the case. However the fairways seemed much wider yesterday. SO maybe this will go on throughout the summer.

If this does happen then there can be less complaint from the golfers if the rough is penal just off the fairway. However it could perhaps be even better if we end up having both a first and second cut of rough. With the second cut of rough reserved for very wayward shots.

The other change that we noticed is that the greens are improving quite a bit. They are still pretty slow but the grass coverage is much better now. We will have to see what they are like after the upcoming tining of the greens.

Starting this coming week (probably Tuesday), for the next 2 weeks, 9 holes of the Master Course will be closed while greens are tined.

The Classic course has already been done. The front 9 on the Master course will close pretty soon then after that re-opens the back 9 of the Master will close.

Things should be back to normal in around 2 weeks. However it might take a few weeks after that for the greens to recover from the tining.

One thing to remember is that this disruption is necessary if we are to hope to have good greens in the summer. Lets hope all goes well.

Bottles and chocolates

A trip to Mercadona for bottles and chocolates ready for Friday golf.

The week before last was the first time in ages I have won nearest the pin. So it was the first time I had won these rather nice (but very rich) chocolates in the blue bag.

In between the cold, windy and wet weather we have been experiencing recently the organisers of the first Pink Charity Golf Day on Friday 10th April managed to conjure up a sunny day with just enough breeze to challenge the scoring. 52 players took part in teams of 4 with prizes for best lady, best man, teams, nearest the pins, longest drive, putting and a special Pink Ball team challenge.

Generous sponsorship was received from a range of businesses and individuals for prizes and raffle prizes and the organisers wish to thank everyone who provided prizes, helped out on the day and the evening, took part, bought raffle tickets and special thanks to those who wore something pink- especially those who went a bit OTT and won some special awards for their brave dressing!

The evening event was held at Leos bar where an evening of good food and camaraderie was topped off by a thank you address from Angela from the Asociacion de Espanola de Controla de Cancer, a live auction of two items by Brian D, a silent auction for a Garmin Sat Nav and a play off on the tiled floor for the Ladies putting prize, a great evening was had by all.

Well done to all the prize winners who are:-

Best Lady: Penny J – 41 points

Best Man: Paul W – 39 points

Best Team: Paul W, Penny J, Barrie J and Fiona H – 98 points (must be some sort of record!! - Editors Note: Not quite. There are records of Friday results going back to 2007 on the FGS website even though the society did not exist until 2011. However the scores were not recorded in the results until the start of 2010. Since then two teams have scored 99 points and 4 teams have scored 98 points)

2nd Team: Rafael L, Kristina O, Rolf J, Sharon S - 90

3rd Team: Eduardo P, Ann N, Lee G, Joan E -86

Pink Ball prize – 4 teams returned the Pink Ball, winners were: David H , Anita G, Frank R and Bill R with 34 points.

Nearest the Pin in 2 at 6th: Mel M and Sharon S

Longest Drive at 14th: Eduardo and Karen P

Nearest the Pin at 17th: John N ( no lady winner!)

Putting: Brian D and Maria C-D

The organisers –Michelle, Mary and David are delighted to announce that the total sum raised – including the collection in Leos bar  - has just exceeded 2400€, an amount that is well beyond anything they had planned or hoped for. This will be donated equally to the two Breast Cancer charities in the UK and Spain.   Thank you once again to everyone who took part and for your contributions to make the day such a success!

Best Wishes Michelle, Mary and David

Editors note: The photos from the prize giving are now available in the Gallery alongside the photos from the day.

Well done to Mary B, Michelle and David H plus all their assistants for putting on a great event yesterday.

We have published the pictures from the day and we look forward to publishing the results and the amount raised for cancer charities in Spain and the UK.

2ND UPDATE ON PINK CHARITY GOLF DAY - Various changes (e.g. clarification of pink ball competition, closing date and time for request for alternative handicaps etc.)

Here is some updated information about the the Charity Golf Day on 10th April, we already have well over 40 confirmed entries so it promises to be a really great day. We can also confirm that we have well over 30 prizes  for the raffle and the sale of the 300 tickets is going well, they will also be available to buy on the day (if we have some left!!)

In advance of the day there are some updates to advise you of.

Draw for teams – this will now take place on Wednesday 8th April in Leos bar at 9 pm.

Golf and Handicap details. We have been asked to clarify these;-

·         There will be individual prizes for the best score by a lady and the best score by a man.

·         There are team prizes for the best 3 teams – the best two stableford scores at each hole to count.

·         There is an additional Pink Ball team prize – using an actual pink ball to be played in strict rotation by each member of the team – as marked on the separate Pink card. The “pink score “ on each hole also contributes to the team score if it is one of the best two scores on that hole. If you lose the pink ball then the Pink Ball team score is final at that point. If you have a pink ball score on the 18th hole then you must RETURN the pink ball!! You can choose to play/not play the pink ball at any hole – (if you think the nominated player of the pink ball may lose it!) BUT remember the Pink ball also counts to the overall team score so this would mean that this player could not contribute to their own or the team score on this hole!!

·         In the case of any ties the lowest handicap will be the winner, in the case of a further tie the scores on the card will determine the winner (best last nine etc )

·         HANDICAPS. The default handicap to be used will be your Friday Golf Society (FGS) Handicap. If you do not have an FGS handicap but have a Spanish Federation Handicap then you should use this. If you have neither an FGS nor a Spanish Federation handicap then you should use your official Club or Federation handicap. If players wish to declare or use handicaps other than on this basis then please contact the organisers with your request by no later than 12:00 noon on Tuesday 7 April 2015.

·         Every effort will be made to make up teams of 4 , if this is not possible due to late withdrawals or no shows then the usual “Doris principle “ will be applied.

Entry fees are 15 Euros, if you can pay your entry fee in advance – at Monday golf on 6th April or Tuesday Golf on 7th then please do this as this will save time on the Charity Day itself. If you want additional suppers for partners/spouses on 10th (also at 15€)  then please let us know, we would also appreciate an indication of your choice of supper of Chicken Curry or Lasagne (or a vegetarian option if required).

IF YOU CAN WEAR SOMETHING PINK THEN PLEASE DO SO!

Please contact David Holden if you have any queries or concerns or can no longer take part. If you do not have his contact details then please contact us and we will pass your email on to David.

With many thanks

Michelle, Mary and David

Pink Charity Golf Day - 10 April 2015

The entry sheet for the Pink Charity Golf Day will be posted on the Almerimar Golf Shop Notice Board on Friday 20th March. If you wish to enter but are not in Almerimar currently, then you can send a message to the organisers simply by contacting us. We will pass the message on to them.

Tee Times have already been reserved commencing at 1100 – but due to pressure on tee times the event may be limited to 60 players.

The competition will be teams of four (drawn by handicap) with the best two scores to count – prizes will be awarded for teams as well as best men and ladies individual scores , nearest the pin, longest drive and a special ‘actual Pink Ball’ team score.  Entry fee (excluding green fee) is 15€ and includes golf goodies, evening drinks, supper, prizes and dancing at Leos from 8pm. There is also a Grand Raffle which will be drawn during the evening with over 20 prizes. Tickets will be on sale from 20th March and are limited to 300 tickets at 5€ each or 5 for 20€.

Entries close at noon on 7th April (or before if playing limit reached) with the draw for teams taking place at Leos Bar at 9pm that evening.

One of our readers, Peter W, has sent us details of the link here where you can test your knowledge of the rules of golf and learn some stuff.

According to Peter it takes around an hour to do the first stage of the work on the site once you have registered.

I think I will give it a go sometime soon when I have a spare hour or two.

Breast cancer charity golf day - 10 April 2015

Please see above the first flyer for the charity golf event at Almerimar on Friday 10 April 2015. (Click on the image to see a version you can re-size).

Organisation of a Charity Golf Day on Friday 10th April continues and the organisers Mary B, Michelle O’K and David Ho have asked us to publish the first calling notice for the event. They already have lots of generous sponsorship of prizes for golf and the raffle – but would be delighted if any else would like to contribute – either businesses or private individuals. Restaurant vouchers, golf prizes, wine and spirits would all be gratefully received!

Entry to the day opens on March 20th and will close on 7th April - when there will also be an evening draw for teams - in Leo's at 9pm that evening. The raffle tickets will also be on sale from around March 20th – they will cost 5€ each or 5 for 20€. The organisers have decide to limit raffle tickets to 300 to ensure everyone who buys tickets has a good chance of getting a prize – they think they will have at least 20 raffle prizes.

If you want to donate a prize, pre-order raffle tickets or enter the competition and you will not be in Almerimar then you can contact Jacqui M or John Wo. They will then pass your information on to the organisers.

11th hole bunker

There have been a few changes on the Master course at Almerimar recently.

As you can see from the photo above, the bunker at the end of the dog leg on hole 11 has been filled in. It is currently ground under repair. I guess it will be grassed over in due course. It should make the lay up shot much easier on this hole (2nd or 3rd shot depending on how far you hit the ball).

Also, the drop zones have been removed on holes 8 and 9. So on both holes you now have to follow the standard rules for water hazards rather than being able to use the drop zone.

Three local golfers (Mary B, Michelle and David Ho) are looking to organise a breast cancer charity golf event in Almerimar later this year.

The committee of the Friday Golf Society has agreed that the event can replace one of the regular Friday golf competitions here in Almerimar.

We understand that, like the annual Francis House event, the competition will be open to all golfers wishing to take part (not just members of the Friday Golf Society).

The organisers are currently planning for the event to take place on Friday 10 April 2015. However this date has yet to be finalised.

Once the date has been confirmed we will publish more details here.

My guess is that there will be some sort of raffle so people who do not take part in the golf competition will be able to buy raffle tickets (or make a donation to the charity).

We went out and played 9 holes for practice this morning.

Work on the course continues. There is new sand going in on a lot of bunkers now. There is a lot of it and it looks finer. So bunker shots feel very different now.

If you want to know the prices for bulk purchasing of green fees at Almerimar for 2015 you can contact the pro shop for details. As usual there is a discount for those people purchasing early. The cut off date for getting the discounted price is 27 January 2015.
