Golf practice net November 2016

Golf practice net November 2016

For ages now I have been wondering what the 4 wooden posts were for in the area close to the first tee on the Master course.
Now we know.

As you can see from the photos above there is a practice net being built close to the new starters hut.

John Andrew's entry list for the 2016 Francis House charity golf competition is now up on the noticeboard in the clubhouse. The competition is taking place on Saturday 19 November 2016.

The competition has taken place annually in Almerimar since 1996. As usual it is a better ball pairs competition.

John will be letting people know further details closer to the date of the event.

Almerimar golf winter opening times 2016

When I was down at the clubhouse the other day I took a photo of the notice showing opening times for the golf this winter now the clocks have changed.

John A has informed us that this year the annual Francis House charity golf competition is being scheduled for Saturday 19 November 2016.

I will publish further information about the competition here when John passes it on to me.

Firstly, welcome back to Marianne & Sune who we met in the clubhouse yesterday afternoon after we had a knock-around on the Master course.

There are some changes being made on the Master course for the winter.

The first thing is that there are some white lines along the edge of the fairways defining different shaped edges to the fairways. I guess the green keepers will be cutting the fairways to these edges at least for the winter period. So it looks like a lot of the fairways are going to be narrowed a bit for the winter.

The second thing is that a number of drop zones have been put in place for when people are playing friendly golf. I guess they are not for official competitions as the local rules for the course say there are no drop zones to be used in official competition.

Some of the drop zones are the same as before. However others are different making the course easier to play. I guess this is to speed up play in the busy winter period. Here is a list of the drop zones I spotted yesterday:

Hole 1 - a new drop zone just in front of the ladies orange tee. So if people go in to the water on their second

Hole 8 - where it used to be at the side of the pond close to the 9th tee
Hole 11 - a new drop zone at the very far end of the water close to the 11th green.

Hole 12 - the drop zone is located on the island.

We did not spot any other drop zones on the course. However we will take a closer look when we next play.

Work near hole 1

Jacqui and I had a 9 hole knock-around yesterday afternoon. While there I took some pictures of the work taking place close to the 1st tee on the Master course. You can see more photos in the Gallery.

I understand that there is going to be a starters hut, a chiringuito, a parking area for buggies and a small putting green. The putting green is close to the back edge of the 1st tee as you go towards the 9th green.

While we were playing yesterday we were told by friends we bumped into that the greens had been hollow tined and the tees had been worked on while we were away. It is normal for greens in this part of Spain to be hollow tined in September so this was no real surprise.

We can confirm that the greens are still recovering from the tining so they are a little slow at the moment. The good news is that we played 18 holes on Friday then 9 holes yesterday. In those 2 days the greens had improved quite a bit. So all being well they will continue to improve in the coming days.

One of our readers, Peter W, has been in touch saying that he was playing golf at Almerimar today and he met a new guy who said he is going to be the course starter for the busy time over the winter period. It is a Swedish guy named Carl.

So I guess it looks like Carl will be the person using the new starters hut when it is ready.

New small putting green

Further to the story yesterday. Here is a photo of where the new putting green will be located. This is a zoomed in and cropped picture so sorry it is a bit fuzzy.

Work on the chiringuito and starters hut on the 1st hole on the Master course is continuing. When we were playing in the regularidad competition yesterday it looked like they were sorting out the provision of water and electricity to the area.

The other thing that they have started work on is the creation of a small putting green at the back corner of the 1st tee. They have dug out some of the existing grass and look to be getting ready to lay the putting green at the back corner of the tee. Close to where the official white tees are located.

Golf course chiringguito - September 2016

Golf course chiringuito - September 2016

Last Friday I took some pictures of some work taking place on the golf course close to the 1st tee. The photos showed a piece of land being cleared of trees to the left of the 1st tee. Since them I have been so busy I have not had a chance to publish the photos here.

This morning I was walking home after playing bowls and having my hair cut. I went past the 1st tee again and took a couple more photos. The photos above are from earlier today and show that building work is now underway.

Jacqui has been told that there is a starters cabin and a chiringuito being built next to the 1st tee.

While the building is taking place the white and yellow tees have been put forward to the front of the teeing area. I guess this is to protect the workers from wayward tee shots.

I wonder when the new building will open. One guess I have had is that it will probably take a couple of months to complete. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Yconica golf - 27 August 2016

There is a a bit of a change to the calendar of official golf competitions at Almerimar.

The Regularidad competition scheduled for Sunday 28 August has been postponed until Sunday 11 September 2016.

As you can see from the poster above that I picked up off Facebook there is a competition sponsored by Yconica now scheduled for Saturday 27 August.

La Envía - summer 2016

Rob from La Envía has asked me to publish this notice about summer deals for 2016.

When I was at the pro-shop yesterday I was told that the front 9 holes of the Master course will be closed until the weekend. I am not sure whether it will open on Saturday or not. However it is just about certain to be open on Sunday as there is an official competition.

One big improvement that has been made recently is that all of the reeds have been cut down on the pond close to the 11th and 12th greens. I was wondering whether the front 9 had been closed to do something similar to the pond around the 8th green.

I sneaked a quick look at the 8th late yesterday afternoon and no work has been done there yet. The only thing I did see on the front 9 was that the sprinklers were on a lot. So maybe they are just giving the front 9 holes a bit of a rest.

PS The protective seagull parents are still on the rock in the pond close to the first tee. Their baby birds are growing well and can now fly quite well. However the parents still dive bomb you if you get close to the pond.

Ground under repair - 23 June 2016

The improvements to the golf course continue. I had to go down to meet Gabriel from the tourist office so I went via the Almerimar clubhouse and course.

As I walked past the 18th green I noticed that they had marked out 2 areas of ground under repair using blue paint. This is a relatively small thing but it is yet another sign of the continuing improvement on the course.

At the moment I am hearing the same message from everyone that is talking about the course. They are all saying that the condition has improved a lot since they were last here. This is very good news.

On another matter - the protective parent seagulls are still around on the rock in the pond between the first tee and the fourth hole. While their baby birds could not fly they were very aggressive with anyone who went near the area. They dive-bombed people and on occasions tried to crap on the people.

The parents are still around but are not as aggressive as before. However they will still swoop down at you if you go too close to their nesting area. So be careful on the first tee.

Earlier today I was down at the clubhouse picking up the list for Friday golf. While there I noticed that there is now a list of official competitions for the rest of the year at Almerimar.

The next competition is on 12 June 2016. There is one other one in June. Then 3 in July followed 5 in August. There is then one in September followed by a gap. The final 2 competitions of the year are in December.

If I remember I will take a picture of the list tomorrow and publish it here.
